NaPoWriMo Poetry Challenge Day 20! “Daddy’s Calls”

It’s a lovely Sunday and today’s poetry prompt asks us to: “write a poem in the voice of a member of your family. This can be a good way to try to distance yourself from your own experience, without reaching so far away from your own life that it’s hard to come up with specific, realistic details.”

I decided to write in my Dad’s “voice”.

Here is my poem:                                           “Daddy’s Calls”

black-woman-on-phone

Hello daughter! Are you okay?

Hope you’re treating yourself right.

Do you need anything?

Be careful late at night.

Hey my daughter!

How’s university?

Are you still slim? Okay.

Love from the family.

Hello daughter, you’re moving again?!

Where are you off to now? (chuckles)

You’re something else girl!

I’ll call when you’ve settled anyhow.

Hey my daughter!

I’m longing to see you.

You staying slim? Good!

Daddy’s fine girl! Yes, I love you too.

Hello daughter!

I’ve heard about this young man.

Is he treating you right?

Any details of the wedding plan?

Hello my daughter!

How’s things your side of the world?

Say hello to my son-in-law.

Although you’re married, tell him you’re still Daddy’s girl.

Hello daughter! You alright?

Daddy’s not feeling well…

of course you can come visit!

Don’t worry though, it’s just a spell.

Hello…Daddy? You feeling alright?

I’ve booked my flight today.

I love you and I’ll see you soon!

Stay slim, I’m on my way. 🙂

  1. This is a fabulous piece, on so many levels. Made me both laugh and (almost) cry… And I’m amazed at how you managed to span such a long period of time in what is essentially a short piece and still give us a feeling for what has happened. Fabulous!

    • Thank you so very much! My Dad is very special to me. It was an enjoyable experience writing this and I’m about to give him a call. 🙂
I’m glad you were able to feel the storyline. Thank you for the kind comments!

  2. That was wonderful how your traveled through time with just a few brief phone calls! You always find a unique way to tell your stories! 🙂 It sounds like you two have a truly sweet bond. Very well done!
